Updated Nov 19, 2005 Just released, Keeping the West Western, a documentary about Jay Dussard. This 52 minute documentary on DVD was created by Michael Markee during a three year period as he followed Jay throughout the west. It includes scenes from a workshop at a working Montana ranch, Jay's darkroom on his ranch, as well as commentary by Terry Etherton, Bruce Barnbaum, Harrison Branch, and Stu Levy. The DVD can be ordered for $20 from markeeproductions.com . It appears that Nikon is about to announce the new D200 digital SLR. It will have a 10.2 MP DX sensor, a magnesium frame, a 2.5" LCD and 11 AF points. The official announcement is expected shortly. The ESP is $1699. Rumors are starting to emerge on the internet about the future Photoshop CS3. Supposedly there will be two versions, Standard and Premium. Features under consideration are improved Camera Raw, Vanishing Point, non-destructive image editing, as well as a redesigned interface and other performance improvements. There is no indication about a timeframe. Through Oct 31 there is a special rebate of $400 on the Epson Stylus Pro 4800. From ITSupplies the total price is $1395. According to my sources, Polaroid has decided to continue production of the "old" formula Polaroid SX-70 film. This is the film that is capable of post processing manipulation. They previously made a change which no longer allowed manipulation. The "old" process film is presently only available by special order. The Epson R2400 is the 2200 replacement. We previously speculated that the Epson R1800 was the replacement for the 2200, however that does not appear to be the case. The June issue of Shutterbug announced 4 new Epson printers including a 2200 replacement that will be called the Epson R2400 and will sell for $849. It will have a new 8 color pigment ink set including photo or matte black, light black, light light black, cyan, magenta, yellow, light cyan and light magenta. This say this will provide better gray balance as well as less color cast, metamerism and bronzing. There will also be a new advanced mode for black and white printing. Inexpensive Digital B&W using Epson's $99 C86 Printer: Article Using old Nikon lenses on modern DSLR Bodies. I have used a number of Nikon film cameras over the past few years (F, F2, FG) and have acccumulated many lenses. I did some research and have discovered that, despite what you might have read, most of these lenses can be used safely on the latest digital Nikon SLR bodies. A few pre-AI lenses need a $10-35 modification, however most AI and later lenses need no modification prior to mounting on a D70 body. Of course they will only operate in manual mode however using the built-in histogram still allows metering. I will be adding a page on this subject after I do further research. New Plug-In from ThePlugInSite: I am a great fan of Photoshop compatible plug-ins and have been using FocalBlade for sharpening and ColorWasher for eliminating color casts for some time. However this week they announces a new plug-in called LightMachine. This is basically a digital light studio. According the the press release, it can perform "all kinds of light adjustments in photos. It combines shadow/highlight, virtual lighting and color-based correction tools for performing sophisticated corrections without the need for time-consuming selections and layer stacks. It lets you selectively correct photos taken under bad light conditions or with inadequate camera settings and achieve results that rival photos taken under the best circumstances. Additionally LightMachine can achieve special effects like glows, sunsets, high key and selective b/w effects, replace one color with another and simulate polarizing filters." Update to QuadToneRIP: This excellent ($50) Windows shareware program is now available with a standard installer and includes the GUI. It is no longer necessary to use a networked printer, turn off the firewall, deal with binary files, etc. Just download version 2.1d from http://harrington.com/QuadTonePC.html . If you have a previous version it can be removed using a program available from: http://www.sbillard.org/Shareware/QTRgui.htm . Thanks to Roy Harrington (who created the RIP), Stephen Billard (who created the GUI) and Michael Hung (who created RawPrint) for making this possible. Previous Windows solutions cost $500+. Panoramic Software (Latest Versions): I am presently experimenting with PanoTools using PTAssembler as well as two plug-ins Enblend and AutoPano. This appears to be a very powerful set of tools for making panoramic images. Also Check out PanoTools@yahoogroups.com and Panorama Tools Tutorial (epp) New!
